New functionality is being developed and released in the Delft-FEWS software each year. To keep the Delft-FEWS user community up-to-date with new functionality, we organize Delft-FEWS advanced configuration courses. In the training exercises a basic Delft-FEWS application will be used with the 2022.01 Delft-FEWS release. The training introduction will guide all trainees in using this Training application and some nice new features will be demonstrated. The three main topics of this year’s Advanced Course focuses on:

Parallel workflows and Module run times

With Delft-FEWS systems running models for multiple basins and ensembles, functionality is developed to split workflows in parallel sequences on one or multiple servers. In this first training topic we will cover the concept of Delft-FEWS workflows and explain how a forecaster can monitor the progress of workflow activities. With the concept of splitting workflows in parallel sections, runtimes can be reduced by running activities in parallel on one or multiple computers.

Transformations

New transformations are being developed and added to each Delft-FEWS release, an overview of new transformations will be provided. We will discuss in more detail how you can select peak levels in time series, and explain the recently developed Prominence Peaks functionality for selecting historic peak events.

Computational Framework

In 2021 a new Delft-FEWS scenario analysis mode is developed, named the computational framework. With these developments, Delft-FEWS can run in non-operational modes, it can run tasks such as batch running, and the comparison of model runs is supported. One of the key concepts is the Delft-FEWS standalone links to the archive in the similar way as the OC connects to the database. The concept of the Delft-FEWS Computational Framework will be presented and we will explain how to use the new What-If scenario functionality in combination with modifiers in a forecasting system.

Online format

This course will be held via MS Teams for which you will receive a course-link.

In preparation of the training, we’ll send you all the material and will ask you to install the stand alone Delft-FEWS application (Delft-FEWS 2021.02) on your own machine. While attending the training, it will be essential that you have a sufficiently fast internet connection to support a video call, as well as a headset.
