This river modelling course is intended for Delft3D Flexible Mesh (Delft3D FM), Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2 users. Delft3D FM is the next generation simulation software package for evaluating and forecasting hydraulic functioning of rivers under normal, extreme and exceptional conditions, and the successor of Delft3D 4 and SOBEK 2. During this four-session course, we will address key functionalities such as: 2D river hydraulics, river morphodynamics, and the use of Real-Time Control and Python scripting.

Course background

This course focuses on hydraulic behaviour in rivers. Following a stretch of the Dutch river Waal, we will cover the basic functionalities required in consulting projects.

You will learn how to set-up and work with a 2D model in Delft3D FM for accurate computations. In this course the first two sessions are focussed on building a hydrodynamic model from scratch and editing it to assess the effect of measures in the river. You will learn advanced visualisation techniques using Delta Shell, QUICKPLOT and QGIS. Furthermore, the real-time modelling of movable structures is explained and a brief introduction to the Python scripting functionality. On the third and fourth session of this course, we will give an introduction to modeling of river morphodynamics and sediment transport with Delft3D FM (in 2D).

At the end of this intensive course, you have made your own model and applied the advanced functionality of Delft3D FM, which you can use for future reference in your projects.

Session 1: 2D hydrodynamics – introduction

  • introduction to theory and software
  • getting familiar with 2D modelling of river hydrodynamics
  • grid generation and set-up of 2D models

Session 2: 2D hydrodynamics – model editing, visualisation and real time control

  • effect of side channel
  • visualizing results
  • real-time control

Session 3 (2D morphodynamics – introduction

  • introduction to theory and software
  • setting up a morphodynamic model

Session 4 2D morphodynamics – river training and model sensitivity

  • influence of river training (groynes, dredging)
  • model sensitivity and calibration

Experience with river hydraulics and modelling is recommended.
