Why a hands-on workshop on dynamic vegetation modelling? With more attention for climate change impacts and sustainability, we get more and more questions on how (semi-) natural systems such as mangroves and saltmarshes can aid in the protection of coasts, and how such systems will develop over time under various forcing scenarios. Rivers pose us with similar challenges: we want valuable nature whilst staying safe from flooding. Vegetation grows and decays as conditions change, so such questions require the application of biogeomorphological models to quantify system behaviour and performance. 

How does a salt marsh develop over time, and how will it perform during storm conditions? (Figure: Best et al., 2018)


Workshop contents

Recently, we incorporated advanced vegetation representation in the Delft3D FM Suite and we created Python-based tools for the dynamic interaction between vegetation and physics using the fast and easy-to-use Basic Model Interface technique (BMI). In this workshop, we aim to give you an idea of what you can do with these tools and how to use them by modelling the development of a salt marsh, and we would like feedback on what other functionalities you need for the applications you have in mind.
