Recent developments in the Delft3D FM Suite have enabled the design of more and more efficient hydrodynamic models, extending from rivers, lakes, estuaries, the coastal zone to the deep ocean, also taking into account deep ocean sea level, density and current dynamics.

From the recent developments with the D-Water Quality processes integrated with D-Flow FM module in the Delft3D FM Suite, water quality and ecology models also benefit from the smart grid resolution and parallelization capacities of the D-Flow FM module. In recent projects, new fine-scale 3D models have thereby been set up over large domains. Such models are used, for example, to support local water management authorities, or to investigate ecological effects of climate change in combination with future marine spatial planning initiatives.

In parallel to the 3D developments in the D-Flow FM module, new features are continuously being added to the D-Water Quality module to address urgent challenges in marine and coastal management. Within the H2020 IMPAQT project, a new seaweed growth model was developed and applied in an Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) model for the Dutch coastal waters. The use of such models in the D-Water Quality module of the Delft3D FM Suite will open the door to larger-scale studies on ecosystems’ carrying capacity for innovative aquaculture systems in the context of a changing environment.

In the first part of this webinar, we will present the new opportunities created by the D-Water Quality processes integrated with D-Flow FM module, illustrated with examples from recent and ongoing projects. These regional-scale models cover different areas of the globe, with different hydrodynamic and ecological characteristics, and subject to different human pressures. 

The second part of the webinar consists in a demonstration of IMTA modelling for the Dutch coastal waters, followed by a discussion on remaining challenges, pros and cons of using the new "integrated, running simultaneously" option versus using the "file based, running sequentially" option, and perspectives of IMTA modelling with the Delft3D FM Suite.
