DSD-Kampala 2023 - dsd-kampala

Although the Software Days are already common in other regions, this is our first in Africa. The event was not just fully booked but also oversubscribed, all through the power of word-of-mouth. 

The Deltares Software Days in Kampala, Uganda (DSD-Kampala 2023), was organized in collaboration with the Makerere University, and was borne out of our work on the Greater Kampala Integrated Flood Resilience Program. For the event we assembled a dynamic cross-section of professionals, including practitioners and scientists hailing from private engineering firms, research institutes, NGOs, and water agencies in Uganda.

The community joined us from Wednesday 4 to Friday 6 October 2023 in Kampala where we brought together water practitioners, modellers and researchers to explore open source hydrological simulation software for urban flood modelling with Delft3D FM Suite, flood impact using Delft-FIAT, catchment hydrological modelling with wflow, as well as leveraging global earth observation data with GoogleEarthEngine.

Focus of the event

The event focused on exchange of experiences, knowledge, development, and good practices in water related modelling in the East Africa region. The event aimed to attract water professionals, scientists, lecturers and researchers from a broad spectrum of organisations working in the water sector in Uganda and elsewhere in East Africa.

Seminar, workshops and short courses

The program consisted of a 1-day seminar on “Models and decision-making in the wake of climate uncertainties” and two days of workshops / training sessions using Deltares open-source software. Four courses were offered. With each course being repeated on the second day so that participants got two chances to follow the courses they want.
