In this 1-day in-person course (conducted twice), we will discuss the basic principles of river basin forecasting and how Delft-FEWS provides the platform for forecasting systems. River basin modelling will use wflow, Deltares’ state-of-the-art and open-source hydrological modelling framework.

Delft-FEWS is a software package developed by Deltares to provide an easy and modular way of setting up operational forecasting systems. Due to the modular approach Delft-FEWS allows you to plug in a wide range of data sources, models and data types. This can all be configured in the Delft-FEWS configuration files. Delft-FEWS was originally intended for hydrologists and used for Flood Early Warning. Currently Delft-FEWS is used in over 40 countries over the whole world and has expanded its areas of applicability towards droughts, hydropower, coastal systems, data conversion, shipping, dredging and long-term scenario studies.

wflow is Deltares’ own distributed hydrology modelling software which maximizes the use of earth observation data and calculates all hydrological fluxes at any given location and time step, using physical parameters and meteorological input data. The wflow framework is an open-source framework, newly developed in the Julia language. This structure allows users to build their own models from (open) global data and combine different modules. Major processes that can be included are snow and glacier melt, interception, soil moisture, runoff generating processes, sediment transport and river flow. This flexible modelling framework is being used around the world to simulate river flows for flood forecasting, flood risk analysis, water allocation modelling and water quality analysis. Its soil moisture module is providing valuable input for drought analysis and slope stability modelling.

Aim of the course
After taking this course the participants have a basic understanding of the structure of the Delft-FEWS configuration and of wflow. They are able to configure basic functionality in Delft-FEWS and run and visualize results of wflow.

In this course the participants learn:

  • How to start the Delft-FEWS software
  • Where to adjust the lay-out and system settings
  • How to import measured data
  • How to run wflow
  • How to visualize gridded and scalar data as well as wflow outputs

For this course:

  • Participants must bring their own laptop and mouse.
  • Deltares will prepare stand-alone installers for Delft-FEWS and wflow and will share it with the participants during the training. For the installation, you need administrator rights on your device. In case you do not have sufficient rights for installation, please ask your IT department to install the software ahead of the training dates.
